PrepNow Tutor - Emmanuel T.
A test prep tutor since 2004, Emmanuel holds a BS in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA with a concentration in operations management from the University of Michigan. His first full-time job was working for a test prep company, where he taught courses and managed satellite locations. In addition to tutoring, he has worked in financial services, manufacturing, technology services, and training.
Emmanuel started tutoring in high school, initially helping peers in STEM courses until he transitioned to also teaching test prep. “I enjoy the opportunity to help students get past the ACT/SAT to go after their career goals,” he says. He has worked with hundreds of students at every scoring level in both individual and group settings. “It’s important to leverage what the student does well or has an interest in to help new ideas stick,” Emmanuel says when reflecting on the tutoring process. “Improvement is about expanding your tools and knowing how and when to use those tools,” Emmanuel adds.
Emmanuel’s teaching style is inspired by The Animal School by George Reavis. He always identifies and builds on his students' established tools and believes that understanding each student's perspective is critical. “The standardized tests aren’t goals, but gatekeepers,” he explains. Emmanuel considers it his job to help students through the SAT and ACT gates that stand between them and their school and career goals. When tutoring, he loves to consider how the exams are designed. “I am curious about all of the answer choices,” Emmanuel says. “The SAT and ACT do a very good job of picking thoughtful, wrong answers. I enjoy questions where I have an idea of how you reasonably get the wrong answers as well as the correct ones.”
In high school, Emmanuel was a football statistician and, in college, he was a basketball manager. He enjoys board and card games and watching sports, is related to someone who has won Olympic medals, and has coached middle and high school debate. “I earned some company-level awards in my technology services roles,” Emmanuel says. “I have also received awards as a volunteer in policy debate.”
