PrepNow Tutor - Maria M.
A tutor with a strong work ethic who loves to take on new challenges, Maria holds a BS in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University and a MEd in education technology from Notre Dame College of Ohio, where she also completed her teaching licensure program. Maria has been teaching middle school math and English for more than a decade, and has been tutoring with us since 2013, working in a variety of subjects with students from preschool through high school. “My achievements are the successes of my students,” Maria says. “I am well respected as a tutor in my community, and I have been recommended by one family to another regularly.”
Maria first started teaching as a catechist for her church and as a docent at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She loved the work so much she decided to become a full-time math and English elementary and middle school teacher. “I love the interactions with my students, and I thrill every moment that a student ‘gets’ a concept that previously eluded them,” she says. In addition to her work in the classroom, Maria tutors ACT, SAT, and PSAT test prep, and math up to algebra II. “I use a lot of questioning in my tutoring,” Maria says. “I try to ascertain what a student understands about a topic, and then I try to give them the tools that they need to build on that topic.” She also incorporates study skills into her tutoring, saying, "What is even more important than the particular concepts is the learning of skills so that students can be even more successful in the future."
In high school and college, Maria was an oboe player in the orchestra and played various instruments in band. Currently, Maria is a volunteer at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and a catechist for her church. She enjoys biking, playing with her Shiba Inu dogs, and reading.
