Manuel R. has been teaching and tutoring algebra, geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus for the last twenty years. When it comes to standardized tests, he is particularly adept at helping students increase their confidence and their scores.
Whether he’s teaching in the classroom, tutoring after school, or learning something new, education holds a predominant place in his heart. Manuel holds a bachelor’s in math from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s in math education from Harvard University. After Manuel started tutoring in 2006, he founded a business that focused on students who struggled with high-stakes testing, including the ACT, SAT, ASVAB, GRE, Texas-TSI, and Texas’ math and reading STAAR tests. A lifelong learner, he is currently earning a PhD in industrial and organizational psychology.
Manuel’s tutoring style is encouraging and cooperative. His calm, upbeat demeanor puts students at ease, which ensures the student’s brain is open and able to absorb new information. While navigating tricky concepts, Manuel likes to use drawings and funny, real-world examples to give his students several tools and images they can refer back to. He wants his students to be able to approach tests and schoolwork with a sense of empowerment.
In 2015, Manuel received a grant to write a curriculum concerning high schoolers’ college readiness—particularly in maths—for the University of Pan American. In 2016, Harvard University awarded him a full scholarship to pursue a master’s in math education.
In high school, Manuel enjoyed swimming and playing football. He continued to play football at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
When he’s not tutoring or learning something new, he enjoys powerlifting, bodybuilding, reading, writing, and leading his prayer group. Fun fact: he appeared in the NCAA College Football video game for the PlayStation 4!
