Amiri's Bio

Amiri earned his bachelor’s in visual and dramatic arts: film and photography from Rice University. He was the recipient of several grants and scholarships, including the Gates Millennium Scholarship (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and the Let Creativity Happen! Express Grant (Houston Arts Alliance). Amiri also had the opportunity to participate in the Summer Studios Residency in Houston; this program allowed emerging artists to work on the art houses that were a part of the Project Row Houses site. The artists transformed the art houses into temporary studios to engage the community and ignite dialogues about social perspectives. Upon graduation, Amiri served as an educational media designer for the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication at Rice University. He simultaneously began working as a part-time SAT/ACT tutor in order to generate extra income. “Initially, it was just a job, but teaching quickly evolved into a very intense passion,” Amiri says.

In order to establish an artistic career, Amiri determined that he needed more experience in the business arena. Via a tutoring connection, he was offered a job with a startup company that acquired and developed new retail franchises. Amiri works in property management while he continues to develop his skills and portfolio, and he eventually plans to apply to a graduate program. Amiri hopes to find a program that will “ideally focus on the bridge between entertainment, education, art, and technology’s role as both a benefit and a detriment to all three.”

When asked about his approach to working with students, Amiri shared that inspiring confidence in students is critical for present and future success. Amiri sets out to empower students so that “they know they can solve any problem with critical thinking in order to do something they have never done before.” He is very attuned to the frequent disconnect that occurs between high school education and higher education. Amiri has observed that high school students often struggle with problem solving and processing information, which are essential skills in higher education. According to Amiri, one of his greatest thrills as a tutor is “watching the wheels turn as someone begins to learn something new.”

In high school, Amiri was active in sports and the arts. Amiri participated in tennis and cross country, and he was a member of the jazz band and marching band. In college, Amiri served as president of the National Society for Black Engineers and as the vice president of finance for the Rice solar car team. These days, Amiri enjoys live performances, seeing films, and trying out new restaurants. Fun fact: Amiri has the same number of brothers and sisters: four.
