PrepNow Tutor - Nathan W.
Nathan graduated from the Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in English, and he currently serves as an English writing tutor at Santa Monica College. His additional work experience includes tenure at private ESL schools and freelance/part-time copyediting.
Nathan’s introduction to tutoring occurred in college as a consultant in the writing center at Ohio State. When asked about his approach to working with students, Nathan said that he prefers to intervene as little as possible so students can “show what they know.” He attempts to foster student independence and encourages students to “learn how they learn” because it is such a critical skill. At the same time, Nathan strives “to develop friendly rapport and be as clear as possible” about the rules governing the material they are covering. One of his favorite aspects of tutoring is the “one-on-one dynamic and the opportunity to engage with a student closely” to better understand each student’s individual perspective and challenges.
In high school, Nathan began working in kitchens at various restaurants, which he continued to do until he graduated from Ohio State. He also had a paper route and was active in both athletics and the arts. Nathan was a member of the tennis team and participated in marching band. In addition, he earned several academic accolades, such as the AP Scholar Award and “In the Know” quiz show competitor. These days, Nathan enjoys playing golf and tennis, cooking, and traveling. Fun fact: Nathan grew up in four different states across the Midwest: Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.
