PrepNow Tutor - Megan M.
An attentive and adaptable tutor who does not shy away from a challenge, Megan is passionate about improving the world. She holds a BS in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of California, San Diego, where she received Provost Honors twice for her outstanding GPA. While in school, Megan was a lab assistant for the biomedical engineering department at the University of California, Los Angeles. In addition to tutoring, she hopes to continue her education in genetics and genetic counseling and ultimately pursue a career working in a cancer research lab.
Megan became a tutor in high school when a family friend needed help in her English class. When reflecting on this experience, Megan says, “I found that I enjoyed helping others understand difficult concepts and seeing the joy in their success. I love knowing that I can help others recognize their strengths and succeed.” She has since taught students in middle school to those in college, teaching test prep, general chemistry, biology, genetics, marine biology, organic chemistry, reading comprehension, and essay writing. Megan describes her tutoring style as process-oriented as she focuses on strategic thinking and understanding the thought process behind a student’s work. Rather than telling a student they are incorrect, she asks them to walk her through their process to determine where they went wrong, thereby guiding a student toward the correct approach. “It’s about building up the student’s confidence and having them focus on the process rather than just getting to the correct answer,” she explains. “I believe this allows a student to truly learn the concept and promotes adaptive thinking and problem-solving.”
In high school, Megan served as a student ambassador, was voted “most likely to take over the world,” and was the founder of her school’s Stand Up to Cancer society. In college, she volunteered at the school’s thrift shop, where all the proceeds went to funding scholarships. Megan is an avid reader who loves writing, cooking, baking, reading scientific research papers, analyzing movies and TV shows, knitting, and learning to staff spin. Though she received her degree in science, Megan’s heart lies in literature and she hopes to write a book one day.
