PrepNow Tutor - Monica V.
Monica is an enthusiastic, well-traveled tutor who a friend once described as the female version of Alan Alda. Monica earned her BS in physics and her BA in Spanish from Iona College. She also holds a master of environmental management degree in energy from Duke University. She currently works as an energy efficiency and management fellow.
Monica first began tutoring while in junior high. In college she worked as a physics tutor, and since then she has served as a mentor for BOOST (Building Opportunities and Overtures in Science and Technology), a science program for underrepresented minorities and kids from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition to the math and science tutoring she has done, she has several years of experience tutoring students preparing for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. She is very enthusiastic about education and learning and strives to spread that enthusiasm to her students. She makes her tutoring sessions fun and interesting by infusing humor into her lessons.
When tutoring, Monica tries to be both a coach and a mentor. She tailors her lesson plans to her students and is always willing to hear feedback on how her students feel the sessions are going. She is happy to serve as a resource for her students, and she always responds to messages within 24 hours. She says of tutoring, "I always had a positive mental association with school thanks to many great teachers and wonderful mentors; I'd like to do the same for my students."
While in high school, Monica was active in many clubs and activities, including National History Day, orchestra, National Honor Society, tennis, and French Club. She continued her busy lifestyle in college by joining the crew team and Model UN. Today, Monica is an avid traveler. She describes traveling as "one of life's greatest learning experiences" and has been to many places across the world, including Rome, Peru, and Spain. Monica also enjoys kayaking, zumba class, and experimenting with new recipes.
