Jonathan's Bio

A tutor with a creative mind thanks to his varied interests and broad range of experiences, Jonathan values kindness and finds joy in helping others. He earned his BS in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and his MS in marketing research and PhD in marketing from Temple University. Throughout his twenty-five-year career, Jonathan worked as a marketing science management professional and middle school, high school, and college-level educator. As an entrepreneur, he conceptualized and developed the world's first web-based, automated and adaptive, instructional application that simulates a live tutor. Jonathan is now semi-retired and provides individualized and customized tutoring services.

Jonathan started teaching because it was required by his doctoral program. Later, when developing a web-based tutoring application, he chose to pursue a state-licensed teaching certification for middle and high school math to better understand how students learn and how they process math instruction. Since then, he has taught at all levels from middle school through college. “I really enjoy it when I see the 'aha moment' for a student,” he says. At the high school level, he has tutored pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus. At the college and graduate level, he has taught marketing, advertising, consumer behavior, and research methods. Additionally, Jonathan has extensively tutored the SAT/ACT and other standardized test prep (SSAT, HSPT, GRE). When asked about his tutoring style, Jonathan explains, “It is largely Socratic, tending to ask a lot of questions intended to lead students to the correct approach/answer.” He doesn’t like to see a student become frustrated. If that appears to be happening, he will usually engage in some direct teaching and then revert to the Socratic approach once the student begins to grasp important concepts.

In high school, Jonathan was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in baseball, golf, duplicate contract bridge, and chess team. He enjoys sailing, planted tank fish keeping, painting, golf, bridge, reading books about particle physics and cosmology. He also loves animals, especially dogs, and wanted to be a veterinarian.
