PrepNow Tutor - David F.
David calls himself a storyteller with a lot of experiences to share. He holds a BA with honors in classics and an MA in teaching from Washington University in St. Louis. He has been a full-time teacher since 2012, working in public, magnet, and private schools. He has taught Latin, computer technology, and math to students in grades 4-8 and 7-12. As such, his math experience includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, pre-calculus, and calculus. In addition, he has founded Junior Classical League chapters at three schools (devoted to the study of Greek and Latin languages and cultures) and has coached students who have been recognized at the area, state, and national level. Yet still, David also has years of SAT and ACT test-prep experience with another company and as an in-person tutor for StudyPoint. Thus, he brings with him a wealth of experience.
David learned that he was meant to be a teacher by taking on a couple tutoring gigs in college and then becoming the new-member educator for his fraternity. As he worked toward his goals, David knew he wanted to be the kind of teacher that affects students by setting a good example. He says, “In high school, I could tell which teachers loved their content area, and which were just ‘paying the bills’; this directly impacted how much I cared about each subject and how much I learned in those classes.” Keeping this reality in mind, David always works to show his joy for teaching as well as his love of it: he seeks to model the investment he hopes students will demonstrate. He notes, “Teaching is all about making connections. The more I learn about my students and the more interest I show in knowing them as a person, the easier it will be for us to go on a journey of collaborative learning together.”
Back in high school, David was quite active, as he played football, ran track, competed in shot put and discus throw, and became an Eagle Scout. These days, David is more of a coach to students than a player, but he still loves sports. Particularly, he roots enthusiastically for the Texas Longhorns and Houston Texans football teams. Finally, he is also a classic rock aficionado (he started playing guitar more than 25 years ago) and a self-proclaimed “Harry Potter nerd.”
