PrepNow Tutor - Maria S.
A compassionate and adaptable tutor with a sense of humor, Maria has a deep love for learning and is always seeking new perspectives. She holds a BA in liberal arts from Thomas Aquinas College and an MA in linguistics from Wayne State University. After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Maria worked as a high school teacher for six years while also tutoring privately. She took a break from teaching last year so she could focus on finishing her master's degree and is thrilled to be teaching and tutoring again.
Maria was homeschooled for grade school and high school and discovered her love for helping others learn while assisting her younger siblings with their math assignments; she continued to tutor through college. “I love teaching because it allows me to share my knowledge and help my students cultivate a love for learning while meeting their goals,” Maria says. As a high school teacher, Maria taught math, Latin, introductory physics, earth science, and writing. Throughout those years of teaching, Maria also tutored privately in elementary math, middle school math, high school math, Latin, English, and test prep.
“Much of my teaching has been in the style of the Socratic Method, which encourages students to be active learners,” Maria says when asked to describe her tutoring style. “I strongly believe that it is important for students to learn to think critically and to understand the WHY behind things. I aim to create a supportive environment in which students can learn to express their ideas clearly and challenge assumptions.”
Maria was a music nerd in high school and she participated in choir and orchestra, playing the violin.
These days, she loves to experiment with cooking and baking and enjoys visiting aquariums, studying languages, and watching a good TV show with her cat, Stella. “I didn't become a cat person until I was 26, and now they're my favorite animal,” she says.
