PrepNow Tutor - Jonathan M.
A naturally curious individual who is always seeking to expand his knowledge, Jonathan holds a BS magna cum laude in chemical engineering with a minor in math from Texas A&M University. Since graduating, he has worked in the chemical industry, with over five years of experience as a plant and production engineer, supporting various production units. “In my role, I apply core engineering fundamentals and problem-solving techniques to address complex process challenges, improve operations, and support safe and environmentally responsible operations,” Jonathan shares.
Jonathan started tutoring in college, teaching peers in math and reviewing essays at the writing center. He also has extensive experience tutoring his younger siblings in all subjects. “My proudest moment as a tutor was helping my sister get an A in pre-calculus, a subject she had always struggled with,” Jonathan recalls. “Before an exam, we reviewed and worked through many problem sets. I taught her a systematic way to approach and solve math problems, which helped her understand the material and resulted in her passing the class with an A.”
When tutoring math, Jonathan emphasizes a clear problem-solving process that students can rely on across different types of questions. As he explains, this approach helps students feel more confident when working through new material. “There are some subjects that require memorization, which I like to teach with repetition,” Jonathan adds. “In addition to memorization, I always explain the ‘why’ behind concepts to allow students to fully understand.” However, Jonathan’s teaching style adjusts based on the subject and the student’s style of learning.
In college, Jonathan was on the dean's list, received the College of Engineering Merit Scholarship, and was a member of the Chemical Engineer Honor Society and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
Outside of work, he likes to go to the gym, run, read self-development books, and hang out with family and friends. He recently ran his second marathon. “I consistently strive to exceed expectations and bring my best effort to everything I do,” Jonathan says.
