PrepNow Tutor - Conrad S.
Conrad has been a peer facilitator and physics tutor and has ample experience doing educational outreach at a science museum. He received a BS in physics from the University of Houston. In addition to tutoring, he is pursuing research projects in physics education.
During high school, Conrad worked for the Houston Museum of Natural Science, focusing mainly on R&D. One of the projects he worked on (which is still playing at the museum) was developing a video about Mars' South Pole. In college, a professor recommended he become a peer facilitator in the physics department. "Being a peer facilitator was more often than not a highlight of my day," he reflects. "I love showing how weirdly empowering physics can be." Conrad was many students' go-to physics person whenever they had questions. "I have had multiple students thank me after the fact and told me I made them want to learn," he recalls.
Conrad's teaching style relies on building strong foundational skills. "I like to make sure my students can understand the logic behind the problem-solving and it's not something you magically sense after you do so many problems," he says. "Learning physics does require practice, but even more so, it requires comprehension." He's quick to spot any weaknesses and find ways to utilize each student's strengths to fill those gaps.
Conrad has many awards from competing in the SEFH (Science and Engineering Fair of Houston). He was also on the dean's list for all four years of his undergraduate studies. He is proud to share he designed an experiment for the advanced physics lab at UH—the experiment teaches students how to use Python by analyzing a voltage signal.
In college, Conrad was an outreach coordinator for the Society of Physics Students at UH; he helped coordinate outreach events for SPS with science fairs and HMNS (Houston Museum of Natural Sciences).
Conrad shares that he has "a slight artistic tint" to his personality. He enjoys video editing and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Writing fiction for the game has given him a deeper appreciation for creative writing.
