Stephen's Bio

A tutor with a deep love and passion for the field of mathematics and statistics, Stephen strives for optimal results in every field he contributes to. He holds several degrees from Eastern Kentucky University: an AS in actuarial science; a BS in statistics; a BA in mathematics; and an MA in applied mathematics with a concentration in data science. Stephen previously worked as an AI trainer for Outlier.ai, a company that utilizes AI technology in the business world. A recent graduate, he is currently tutoring math full-time. “My love for mathematics stems from the positive interactions I had with my teachers in both middle school and high school,” Stephen explains.

Stephen started tutoring when he was a freshman in college, teaching in the Mathematics and Statistics Tutoring Center at Eastern Kentucky University. “I love improving my students’ lives by constructing and directing healthier mindsets for their education, even if it’s specifically in regards to quantitative courses," Stephen says. Over the years, Stephen has tutored college algebra, precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, and statistics. “I believe that a tutor’s respect for their students and a continuous refinement of the teaching process are the most valuable and essential elements in an educational environment,” Stephen says.

An active and reflective tutor, Stephen always gauges the individual needs of his students and tailors his teaching style to those needs, all while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. Stephen also encourages student experimentation, which in turn enables student growth and empowerment. “In other words, learn from mistakes and always consider feedback,” Stephen says. “A teacher should ask questions to the students to gauge their knowledge, then encourage the students to think about their answers. Every teaching session is malleable through the blending of unique learning needs and teaching methods.”

In high school, Stephen participated on the academic team and engaged in activities at his local church. In college, he was in the math and statistics club, graduated summa cum laude, and received the Dean’s Award.

A self-proclaimed math nerd, Stephen enjoys lifting weights at the gym, playing the occasional video game, and long, quiet walks in nature. “I have a blond streak in my hair,” Stephen shares.
