PrepNow Tutor - Mary S.
Mary has been teaching math for thirty years. She earned a degree in mathematics from DePaul University and attended graduate school at DePaul University, National Lewis University, and Northeastern Illinois University. She is a member of both the National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics and the Illinois Council of the Teachers of Mathematics. She enjoys teaching math because, as she puts it, it is a "fascinating subject with countless and boundless opportunities."
Over the course of her thirty years of teaching, Mary has developed classroom and program curriculums and has spent considerable time learning how to create effective assignments for her students. Through these experiences, she has developed an understanding of what works and what doesn't work in teaching. Not only does she have years of experience teaching, she also has tutored academic and ACT prep students for the past ten years. She currently works with students who have been diagnosed with learning differences and whose programs follow an IEP (Individualized Education Program).
As for why she teaches, Mary says: "I love working with students and realize that their success is the key to a productive and positive future. I love to get to know them and then work on their strengths while continuing to improve upon their challenges." A fellow math teacher says of Mary that she "always strives for perfection in herself and instills in others the same."
Outside of teaching and tutoring, Mary enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering and working with a foundation that helps individuals and their families cope with traumatic brain injuries. She also enjoys spending time with her family and her dog and serves as a coach for an academic team. When asked to describe herself, Mary said, "I am a life-long teacher and learner."
