PrepNow Tutor - Brandon K.
A native of Detroit, Brandon graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering. He is currently pursuing an MS in Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University. He previously worked at Henry Ford Hospital as a clinical research assistant, helping with clinical trials centered on hepatic diseases. Currently he teaches ballroom dance at the Arthur Murray Ballroom Franchise Dance Studio.
Brandon started tutoring in high school, when some of his teachers approached him to help fellow students in math and AP chemistry. He continued to tutor in college through the Urban Improvement Corps, which provides support to inner-city New Haven residents. Brandon has worked with a wide range of learners (from elementary and high school students to adults) and taught students with learning differences, including Asperger syndrome.
Brandon believes that learning should be fun, comfortable, and as interactive as possible. "I like to teach with questions," he says. "'How would you start?' 'What looks wrong here?' 'What could you do to make this equal?' This keeps students engaged because they are playing an active role in their own learning. It also gives them a sense of accomplishment and confidence when they come to an answer." Brandon's favorite areas are math and science, but he likes to work with students on a variety of academic subjects.
Outside of work, Brandon spends his time taking hip-hop dance classes and volunteering for AIDS Partnership Michigan as an HIV Test Counselor. He also loves traveling and has been to some amazing countries, including Turkey and the Dominican Republic.
