PrepNow Tutor - Marlize V.
A fun-loving, energetic tutor with over twenty-five years of experience, Marlize holds a bachelor’s degree in education for high school maths and physical sciences from the University of Pretoria. She has been teaching high school and privately tutoring math and science since 2005.
Marlize started tutoring in college to earn extra income, and she’s been teaching in some capacity ever since. “There has always been someone needing help in my subjects,” she reflects. “I love it when a shy teenager turns into a confident, social adult just because someone believes in them.” Since beginning her tutoring journey in college, Marlize has built over two decades of experience teaching mathematics and science in both traditional and homeschool settings. She has served as a mathematics subject advisor, secondary school science teacher, and self-employed tutor; she is also the founder of a homeschool center for grades 8-12, which she ran for several years before moving countries. Throughout her career, she has helped countless students pass and excel in the GED, SAT, and ACT.
“My teaching style is relaxed and facilitative,” Marlize says. “I want to get to know the students and learn how they think to address the underlying issues and gaps in the foundation. I then teach them how to think in ways that will lead them to the information required.” Marlize is always encouraging as she really cares about her students’ emotional well-being and confidence. “I’m excited to help students find their strengths and utilize these in their academic achievement,” she says. “I am also patient and calm to give my students a positive atmosphere in which to make mistakes as they learn and grow.”
As a student, Marlize participated in field hockey, volleyball, tennis, soccer, dancing, scuba diving, and cycling. She received academic honors from her high school as well as financial assistance for academic excellence at the University of Pretoria while completing her studies. “I love to travel and get to know new people,” Marlize says. “I have two young daughters.”
