Alvin's Bio

Math and test prep are Alvin’s specialties, and he has experience tutoring in one-on-one, online, and in-person settings. While he has worked with students ranging from late-elementary to college-aged, he currently works with middle and high schoolers in algebra (1 & 2), trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus.

Alvin brings enthusiasm to everything he does, which allows him to expose students to information in engaging, memorable ways. With a strong background in chemical engineering, he’s adept at showing students how strong foundational skills come in handy across disciplines, in and out of the classroom. He earned a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Kansas in 2025 and is currently pursuing an MBA.

His experiences helping peers in college classes inspired him to become a tutor. “My proudest moment as a tutor/mentor was when a student thanked me for always asking them how they are doing. This was a proud moment because it showed that I was able to have a positive impact not only in the classroom, but in the student's everyday life as well,” he recounts.

Alvin’s approach is adaptive and rife with repetition. “My method is to break the problem down and solve parts of the problem; then, I put these parts together like an easy four-piece puzzle,” he explains. He aims to foster a fun, welcoming environment so students feel safe asking questions and making mistakes. “Constant repetition is key, and I have found a ton of success with students by using this strategy,” he adds. He also makes a point to check in with students to ensure they’re following along.

His academic and athletic excellence in track and field earned him a full scholarship at the University of Kansas. He’s also proud to share that he earned the title of Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year for track and field—twice—and was an NCAA All-American. He graduated from high school as an AP scholar and in the top 10% of his class.

Outside of work and his own studies, he enjoys running, watching Netflix, and spending time with friends.
