PrepNow Tutor - Maya R.
Maya is continually excited by math and enjoys sharing her love of it with students. Though she had already developed an affinity for math before college, Maya’s connection only grew as she earned a BA in mathematics from the University of Alabama. While in school, Maya began working in 2015 as a math tutor, helping students with algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations. After graduating and taking a year to try her hand at being a mortgage loan officer, Maya found that she missed working with students, and she has since worked continuously as a math teacher for Propel Schools. In that capacity, she has taught middle-school math, algebra, and geometry.
Maya believes in the practical application of math and sees it as an effective way to reach many students. As she puts it, “I am a very hands-on person, and that colors how I teach. Generally, I like to walk with a student completely through a process and then let the student fill in as many blanks as they can.” Of course, some students may require alternative modes of instruction, so Maya adapts to appeal to students in any way she can. Ultimately, she enjoys the chance to share her joy and excitement about math, and she is thrilled to be able to reach more students via tutoring for StudyPoint.
In addition to math, Maya has two other great loves: music and roller skating. In school, she played the clarinet in marching band, the bass clarinet in orchestra, and the piano in jazz band. Her musical skills are so strong that she can chart out music by ear and often just sits and recreates tunes on her keyboard. Maya is also quite skilled, she is happy to say, at roller skating. Not simply a steady roller, Maya enjoys performing tricks like crazy legs, backwards skating, and line dancing.
