Maile's Bio

Maile is a transmission line engineer who became enamored of tutoring while she was pursuing her own degrees. She holds a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she graduated cum laude; she also holds an MS in civil engineering from North Carolina State University. As part of the engineering honor society at the University of Hawaii, Maile became a peer tutor and a teaching assistant for electrical engineering classes. In addition to tutoring engineering specifically, Maile also tutored related math fields, such as calculus and statistics. Indeed, the breadth of her tutoring allowed her to work with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and learning styles, and she enjoyed the novelty that each tutoring session presented. She is eager to continue to use her extensive math and physics training to experience an ever-broader array of students.
Maile takes a confident and adaptive approach to tutoring. She believes her fields of expertise naturally lend themselves to her style. She says, “The core principles of math and physics are consistent across different educational levels, and I enjoy the challenge of tailoring these complex principles to each student's level of understanding.” In order to do so, Maile emphasizes fundamental problem-solving skills rather than focusing solely on rote memorization or specific problems. Ultimately, she notes, “I believe that all students should be guided to be independent learners with a growth mindset, so that they'll be able to be lifelong learners.”
When not working with students, Maile has always enjoyed an array of pursuits. While at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, for example, she raced competitively as part of the sailing team. She also took advantage of the local Hawaiian landscape to take a number of breathtaking hikes. These days, she seeks adventure through her cooking. Because she cannot always travel as much as she might like, she seeks to explore other cultures through their cuisines.
