PrepNow Tutor - Alex G.
Alex is an energetic math scholar with a commensurate love of music. He holds a BA from Bates college, where he majored in mathematics and minored in music. Beginning in high school and continuing through college, Alex has tutored extensively in a plethora of math disciplines: algebra, abstract algebra, precalculus, calculus, multivariable calculus, differential equations, and real analysis.
Alex’s tutoring style is built upon a relationship of trust and upon the empowerment of students. He finds that students can often be fearful or intimidated by subjects in which they need tutoring, so he strives to set them at ease by working through their pre-existing knowledge sets. He says, “I always let students explain what they do understand before assisting them with anything they do not; I know that there are multiple ways to solve a problem, so I encourage students to stick with what they feel comfortable with, suggesting shortcuts or alternative methods when useful.” By taking this approach, Alex establishes a reciprocal process by which both he and the student contribute to the learning process, but which is driven largely by the student. Ultimately this enables students to eventually direct the process themselves, serving them well beyond their sessions with Alex.
Owing to his love of music, Alex can often be found strumming on his bass guitar. However, Alex is also a seasoned athlete. In fact, at Bates College, Alex played for the varsity tennis team, earning all-conference second-team doubles honors and being awarded the conference’s sportsmanship award. He still enjoys playing tennis, but he also stays active by mountain biking and hiking. Recently, in fact, he backpacked across Patagonia for two weeks.
