Riley's Bio

A tutor specializing in math and microeconomics. Riley has experience working with students in middle school through college. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Alabama, with both a master's degree in mathematics and a bachelor's degree in economics. Since earning his degree, he has worked as a mathematics assessor and a data analyst. “Working as a mathematics assessor has helped me hone my skills in giving students feedback on their work and in explaining mathematical concepts,” Riley shares.

Riley started tutoring when he was in high school. “I’ve always had a love for mathematics, and as I’ve learned more about the subject, that has grown into a love of teaching it to people as well,” Riley says. “I first started tutoring in high school, as some of my classmates had siblings who struggled with their work. I love seeing a student fully grasp a concept.” Since 2016, Riley has professionally tutored myriad students in mathematics, ranging from middle school pre-algebra up to college-level calculus. His tutoring has resulted in sharp improvements in student grades and high test scores, and, in one case, he helped a student to graduate high school when she would have otherwise been unable.

When tutoring, Riley focuses on ensuring that the student has a firm grasp of the processes used to solve problems. “I try to get an understanding of the student’s current level of knowledge, and then proceed to explain all necessary concepts that they haven’t mastered yet,” Riley explains. “I also ask students to walk me through solving a problem once they feel like they’ve mastered the subject.”

In college, Riley worked at the library and spent a significant amount of time reading. He enjoys mystery novels and board games. Riley has a cat named Itty Bitty. “The name was not originally ironic but it very much is now,” he jests.
