PrepNow Tutor - William P.
William has over 5 years of experience teaching and tutoring chemistry and math. During his undergraduate and graduate studies, he taught in classrooms and worked with students one-on-one. He received his BS in chemistry at Miami Dade College, and, as of fall 2023, is pursuing a PhD in chemistry at the University of Miami. William works for an organic synthesis lab and hopes to become a professor in the future.
William started tutoring in high school when he helped his older sister with her English homework. During his undergraduate studies, he led multiple discussion sections in general chemistry and organic chemistry. He also tutored math at a tutoring center, working with students in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. In graduate school, he was an organic chemistry laboratory teaching assistant, which involved not only tutoring but also preparing lessons and checking on student progress. While in graduate school in Miami, William was given the Outstanding TA Award for his efforts and outreach.
William adopts a Socratic approach to help students become more empowered in their learning journeys. "I have found that students learn best when they interact with the material at hand and figure out the problem mostly by themselves," he says. "I believe that it is best to let the students lead the session—have them engage as much as possible. My duty is to serve as a guide and make sure to check for focus and understanding," he adds. He aims to provide a solid foundation of principles as well as a low-stakes environment for students to practice finessing their skills.
In high school, William was on both the cross country and track & field teams; in college, he enjoyed rock climbing and soccer. Currently, he is a big fan of video games and loves working out to his favorite musical artists. "I cannot go a day without music!"
