Tamara G., a professional mathematician, has over 11 years of teaching experience. She has made several contributions technical contributions to the STEM community and is equally passionate about helping students excel in math and science.
Tamara's odyssey in math began when she obtained a BS from Dillard University. She later earned an MS in math from Tulane University and went on to receive a PhD in applied mathematics and scientific computing from the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition to tutoring, she works as a senior data scientist at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory. She is a recognized authority in applied data science, particularly as applied to modeling and simulation, visualization, and data interpretability for decision-making.
Tamara started teaching and tutoring as a graduate student. Not only did she teach calculus I, II, and III for seven years as a teaching assistant but she also taught algebra and pre-calculus as a lecturer. She thoroughly enjoyed the several years she worked with 6-8th graders in the "Girls Excelling in Math and Science" program.
Tamara describes her tutoring style as "interactive, engaging, and collaborative." She is dedicated to increasing students' confidence and skills through efficient practice and flexible methods. "It is important for students to participate not only in their learning but also in their understanding of the subject."
As a doctorate student, she received the prestigious NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program fellowship; she was also awarded the Harriett Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship.
These days, she enjoys watching movies and visiting museums. She also enjoys getting outdoors—admiring wildlife, whitewater rafting, and hiking are some of her favorite activities. Fun fact: Tamara is a big fan of black-and-white movies!
