PrepNow Tutor - Jenny R.
A first-generation student, Jenny graduated from Stony Brook University with a BS in math and an MA in teaching math. She holds a math teaching license and has taught in the high school and middle school public school system since 2020. “It’s an honor to bring my love of math and my experience in teaching math to tutoring!” Jenny is currently transitioning outside of the classroom to service students and school faculty in novel ways. She is well-versed with in-person and remote teaching methods and is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association as a tutor.
Jenny started tutoring her peers in high school and continued to do so in college as a teaching fellow, teaching assistant, and academic tutor. “I love teaching and tutoring because I love problem-solving,” Jenny shares. “As a student, I was always up for a challenge. As a teacher, I pushed myself to see how others thought about solving problems. It is especially rewarding to see or hear the light bulbs going off in my students' heads when they truly understand a math concept!" Jenny has taught and tutored all math levels, including algebra, geometry, and algebra II.
“My teaching style is student-centered and focuses heavily on conceptual understanding,” Jenny says. When working with a student, she always explains the reasoning behind doing a problem. “As a teacher, I also place a heavy emphasis on making sure all voices are heard and I also acknowledge the diversity and background knowledge of my students and leverage them as strengths to better facilitate learning,” she adds.
In high school, Jenny was part of the Key Club and the National Honor Society. In college, she was a campus tour guide and academic mathematics tutor. Jenny has two cats (their names are Boba and Mochi) and three turtles (their names are Penn, Teller, and Houdini.) She loves to play video games and is a big fan of jigsaw and sudoku puzzles. “I've lived on a farm and I've never eaten a burger,” Jenny shares.
