Allen's Bio

Allen holds a BS in mechanical engineering (with a minor in applied mathematics) from the University of New Hampshire, where he tutored calculus I and II, finite math (including statistics), and trigonometry in the university's math center. He also holds an MS in mechanical engineering from Tufts University, where he spent two years as a teaching assistant in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, solid mechanics, and applied mathematics. “I loved seeing that moment when the students understand how to solve a problem that they've been stuck on for a while—that "lightbulb" moment when everything finally makes sense to them!” he boasts. Since graduating, he has taught himself Python (the programming language) and is currently learning to speak German and Mandarin.

Allen's tutoring style is comprehensive and versatile. "I focus on the fundamentals, starting with the basics and building on that knowledge base," he says. He uses examples and analogies to demystify tricky concepts and address any learning blocks. "If the students have questions, I try to understand the core problem and—once that’s addressed—build from there," he adds. Understanding every learner is different, Allen is quick to adapt as needed so he’s as helpful as possible.

From 2011 to 2015, the University of New Hampshire awarded him the Presidential Scholarship for academic excellence. He also received the Erika Tardif Scholarship Fund for Science and Math in 2015.

Allen is deeply passionate about environmentalism and, in September 2018, traveled to the Fourth International Seminar on Aerogels in Hamburg, Germany, to give a presentation about his research on aerogels.

In high school, he enjoyed running cross country and track. In college and high school, he was heavily involved in student organizations on environmental action and mechanical engineering.

In his free time, he enjoys running, playing video games, reading, and writing.
