PrepNow Tutor - Tyler S.
Tyler is a biologist by training whose science and tutoring are defined by a measured and thoughtful approach. He works as a lead technician at a microbiology research lab, and he has also become an experienced and impassioned educator.
Tyler holds a BS in biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He began his tutoring career when he volunteered for a non-profit organization that helps people in the community receive a basic education and better employment. As a GED tutor, he found great satisfaction in helping others, so he sought out more tutoring opportunities. Since 2019 he has worked consistently with students, including as an in-person tutor at StudyPoint. All told, he has tutored the subject areas of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, chemistry, and English; and he has tutored many PSAT, SAT, and ACT students.
As a tutor, Tyler values empathy before all else. He knows that he must show each student that he will meet them on their terms. He says, “No two students are alike, so I’m always adapting to their educational and motivational needs. In this way, students know that we are a team, working to achieve their academic goals together.” Tyler also counts himself as a friendly and optimistic person, and he likes to use humor to facilitate a welcoming and fruitful environment.
When not in his actual lab or in his “educational lab,” contemplating how to best help each student, Tyler likes to challenge himself with various interests. One of his first challenges was mastering the trombone—he did so in high school and college, becoming section leader in both instances; as such, if called upon, he can still conjure up a tune or two.
Additionally, Tyler is an avid cook, especially of things that take forever but come with an excellent pay-off (he cites pasta Bolognese and cheesecake as two of his favorite dishes of this kind). Finally, Tyler likes to play long-form video games like Crusader Kings and Civilization, as he relishes their meditative and strategic qualities.
