PrepNow Tutor - Owen A.
“I'm someone with two decades of tutoring experience. I’m organized and have a personable affect, and I swiftly develop a rapport with my students,” Owen says. He holds two BAs from the University of Montana, one in mathematics and the other in physics. Three years after receiving his bachelors', he attended the United States Army Logistics College in operations research and supply chain.
In 2000, Owen first began tutoring at a community college’s student assistance center. In the decades since, he's tutored for the University of Montana’s Math Lounge. He’s tutored elementary through college-level students in a wide array of subjects: pre-algebra, algebra, statistics (standard and AP), calculus (standard and AP), general science, chemistry (standard and AP), and physics (standard and AP). He’s also been a test prep tutor for the SAT and ACT for at least a decade.
Owen’s teaching style focuses on the basics before guiding students into the nooks and crannies of problem solving and understanding concepts. Owen teaches students a fundamental theory that will answer the question and combine it with the information given in a problem. This process allows students to discover what information is necessary and by extension what intermediate calculations are necessary. During a tutorial, Owen guides the student in mapping out the information given back to the first principle to discern what intermediate information is required to answer the question. “Traditional math and science tutoring/teaching begins by using equations and numbers to solve intermediate calculations without clearly explaining why those intermediate calculations are necessary,” Owen says.
Owen’s passion for educating others extends outside academics as he raises awareness around the world for living life after receiving kidney transplants and surviving cancer by climbing mountains. He is the first cancer survivor and kidney transplant recipient to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. In addition to climbing mountains, Owen enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and her daughter, golfing, skiing (cross-country, downhill, and ski mountaineering), and learning to code.
