Private institutions generally do not have funding from the state in which they are located, and are completely financially independent of any government. While this means that private universities generally are not subject to government regulation and enjoy more freedom, oftentimes this also means that student tuition is higher than some of their public counterparts. In the U.S., private universities generally fall into two categories: research institutions, or liberal arts colleges. Some private universities also have a strong religious affiliation, which contributes to their lack of governmental association.
