PrepNow Tutor - Cheryl C.
A college professor and admissions consultant, Cheryl is passionate about helping her students achieve academic and lifelong success. She holds a BA in English literature from Queens College, an MFA in creative writing from National University, a certificate in college admissions counseling from Columbia University, and has completed graduate courses in special education. She is also currently pursuing her PhD in creative writing from Christian Leadership University. As a consultant, Cheryl has coached countless families through the admissions process, guiding students to gain admission into top colleges and universities. In addition to consulting, she teaches college-level English and creative writing courses and writes on a wide range of topics. Her books have been translated into Hebrew, German, Czech, and Polish, and she has been the recipient of academic writing awards.
Cheryl has been guiding families through the college admission process since 2006. “Several successful college admission cases catapulted me into what I do now, and I have never looked back,” she says. “I know it is hyperbole, but the right college can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.” As a high school English teacher turned college professor, Cheryl enjoys helping students make the right decision for their long-term goals and always starts the consulting relationship with a direct plan for action. “I have worked with many different kinds of applicants with phenomenal success,” she explains. “I hold a graduate college counseling certificate from Columbia University, so I am well-skilled in the process—including understanding the intricacies of different college majors and the standards of different universities. My desire to help others remains my strongest asset.”
While Cheryl enjoys walking alongside students through their whole admissions journey, her greatest joy is helping students craft the admission essay. “A well-developed essay reveals a hidden part of the student,” Cheryl says. “Most students do not know how to approach the essay, yet when they discover facets about themselves in the writing process, they become stronger in their resolve to gain entry into the right college. Watching this transformation is quite enjoyable.” Cheryl has extensive experience working with neurodivergent students and with home-schooled students who need help developing a transcript. She also works with struggling learners, such as those with IEP and 504 plans, students not at the top of their class academically, and transfer students. No matter the nuances, she is adept at helping her students become competitive candidates.
In addition to teaching and admission counseling, Cheryl is also a freelance writer, volunteers in the home school community, and runs an online English writing company that helps writers get published. She is a lifelong learner and wants to see every student also thrive academically. “I understand the stresses and fears of both parents and young people,” Cheryl says. “I consider the whole unit—the family— when working with clients. I also understand some young people struggle with time management. I prod young people to keep their deadlines.”
