“I like helping students find the schools that help them become the best version of themselves in all aspects – academically, socially, and professionally,” admissions counselor Anthony B. says. A coach with twenty years of experience, Anthony has helped many national championship-level debaters and general college applicants earn admittance into their top choice universities by leveraging his experience in both business and education. Until June 2022, Anthony worked as Vice President of Learning and Program Management for a bond investment company, leading the company's global learning function with a focus on Millennial and Gen Z recruits. He was hired based on his industry leadership in creating business cases for inclusion, learning and development, and more, as well as his experience as an admissions coach. Anthony is the recipient of numerous industry business awards for his work, including being named a finalist as one of the Top 200 Learning and Development professionals in HR and the Top 100 Leaders in Education award by the Global Forum for Education and Learning based on his work in both debate and college admissions.
The first college graduate in his family, Anthony earned his BA in political science from Stanford University. “I didn’t know how to write my application,” Anthony says. “I read whatever I could on the internet and applied my debate skills to writing the essays, doing interviews, and managing the process. Since then, I have been motivated to help others have an easier time with the process and to leverage the lessons I learned when applying.” A champion high school debater (Top 20 at the Tournament of Champions and a national qualifier in three different events), Anthony worked as a debate coach at Stanford and started two national championship level squads. “My understanding of college admissions and how to market, write, and do excellent interviews comes from debate and my adaptation of the skills a debater learns from it,” he says. “I’ve been successful at helping people prepare for high-stakes interviews from the questioning and answering skills I developed when I competed.”
As a debate and admissions coach, Anthony has worked with many students from disadvantaged backgrounds like his own, as well as students of color. “My greatest success story was working with an Asian American debater who went to one of the most competitive schools in California,” Anthony says. “I had worked with him for three years and his parents thought he had no chance at a top 10 school since he wasn’t at the top of the class in GPA, testing, and rank. I reminded him that his personality, achievements, individuality, and most of all, other-centeredness would serve him well if we marketed his experience properly throughout the application. When he got into Wharton, not only was he shocked – so were his parents and the rest of his school! It makes me happy seeing how my guidance helped launch his current career in finance at one of the top firms in America.”
In 2021 and 2022 alone, Anthony has helped a diverse range of students win admission to MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Rice, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Cornell, and more. His students across the last three years have won about 1.4 million dollars in merit scholarships. He most recently mentored 2022 College Public Forum national winners and a 2021 Lincoln-Douglas high school champion. Anthony also recently qualified and has been invited to join MENSA as a member.
